CHAPTER SIXTEEN
BLOOD BATH
Josie-Mae Kesnann lay back with her head against the rim of the thick-walled, stone bath. It was filled and nearly overflowing, with a creamy, floral bubble bath covering the top. The temperature was so hot she barely moved. Only occasionally would she turn or bob her head as she listened to her music through the expensive waterproof earbuds Lucas had given her. Sheâd said she wanted them for jogging and hiking, so they needed to be sweatproof. She let her long, brown hair half dip and submerge in the water. She hadnât decided if sheâd wash it yet, and if she did, sheâd take her earbuds out. But for now, she was letting the moisturising oils of the bath cream warm and refresh her skin after the drive over.
She slowly blinked her eyes open and looked towards the door. She was sure sheâd heard something. An ominous bang. She sat up a little, sending a gentle ripple down the length of the bath. For a few seconds, she watched the door, waiting for Lucas to come in. It wouldnât be the first time heâd thought up an excuse to see her naked. She didnât mind. It was payment of sorts. And when she wanted and needed sex, she wouldnât complain about his attentions. Especially when she had something on her mind that needed his support, or his wallet. But the door never swung open, and she heard nothing more. She leant back and nestled her neck against the rim of the bath, settling back into the comfortable soak sheâd been enjoying. She was just about to close her eyes again when her gaze flitted to the skylight above. Often, with the lights low â as they were now, sheâd be able to see starlight or even the moon depending on the time of night and year. Strange how tonight, she could see nothing but darkness. It must be cloudy after the rain earlier she thought. As her eyelids half closed, she sat bolt upright and sent a wave of water over the side. The movement had been small and in her peripheral vision more than anything. But it had been there.
She cocked her head slightly, listening. Was something scraping against the tiles up there? Her head snapped upwards again as she heard a faint tap, as if something had struck the glass. Like a birdâs beak, or a small pebble. But they were nearly four stories up. There simply couldnât be anyone, or anything on the roof. She decided that any relaxation the bath now offered her had vanished, and she gripped the sides of the deep stone tub as she stood up and reached for her towel. Above her, the skylight exploded into a thousand pieces and rained down into the room. Then something dark, hairy, and writhing hit the floor. At first, she thought it was a bear, but then, slowly, it began to stand up.
~
Shartale had scaled the roof with relative ease. His feet spread wide and pressed flat against the tiles, despite the sharp angle of the slope.
